NYECBO, supported by FEMNET, joined thousands of activists, advocates, and feminists from around the world at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre in Bangkok for the 15th international AWID forum. The forum’s theme, “Rising Together: Connect, Heal, Thrive,” perfectly aligned with NYECBO’s mission to build competent, healthier, and economically stable communities.
Key Sessions and Discussions
Reclaiming SRHR in Africa
NYECBO actively participated in a session focusing on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) in Africa, “Rethinking and Reclaiming SRHR: Countering the Anti-Rights and Anti-Gender Movements in Africa,” which brought together African feminist leaders and allies to address the growing challenges posed by anti-rights movements.
Strategies for Resistance
During the forum, NYECBO representative Tracy Asatsa engaged in discussions about innovative strategies to counteract regressive forces threatening SRHR. These included:
- Value-based communication strategies
- Strengthening partnerships across feminist and social justice movements
- Empowering youth-led initiatives
- Utilizing creative advocacy methods, such as cultural storytelling and digital literacy
NYECBO’s Contributions
NYECBO shared experiences in advocacy and policy influencing, highlighting our work in consciously influencing policy processes to ensure progressive SRHR policies are developed, reviewed, and implemented. One particular example was NYECBO’s participation in the drafting of the Siaya County Reproductive Maternal Neonatal and Child and Adolescents Bill which is now a law called the Siaya County Reproductive Maternal and Neonatal and Adolescent. The strategy that made the bill effective was the fact that one member of assembly was the sponsor of the bill making it run smoothly in the assembly until the governor accented it into law.
Looking Ahead
Participating in the AWID International Forum 2024 has energized NYECBO’s team and reaffirmed our commitment to advancing gender equality and SRHR. The insights gained and connections made during this global gathering will undoubtedly inform and enhance NYECBO’s future programs and advocacy efforts. AS NYECBO continues its vital work in Kenya, the experience at AWID 2024 serves as a powerful reminder of the global nature of the struggle for gender equality and the importance of international solidarity in achieving lasting change.
